Hidden Treasures |

Vaupés

When considering a trip to the Colombian Amazon, you will think right away of Leticia as an option. But there are many hidden treasures you might want to consider. If you want to get a little off the beaten path, San José de Guaviare and the surrounding area is a good alternative. If you really like adventure, the virgin jungle regions of Vaupés and Caquetá are even better, or consider exploring other parts of the Amazon department that are hardly known to the usual tourists. Here are just a few of the beauties Colombia has to offer.

Vaupés

One of the most remote, adventurous and beautiful places in Colombia is the Amazon department of Vaupés, on the border with Brazil. So remote that a visit to this area is not called a trip but an 'expedition', like a true voyage of discovery.

Cañon del Diablo

Puerto Santander', or also called 'Araracuara', is a very remote jungle settlement on the Caqueta River. Here the ‘Escudo Guayanés’ (Guiana shield) left some marks in the jungle, with some rocky mountains, sticking out of the Amazon rainforest. Visiting the 'Cañon del Diablo', a huge canyon on the Caqueta River, is amazing, and visiting rivers nearby, like the Yari River, or further down the Cahuinari, will make the experience complete.

Traditional Ceremonies in the Amazon

An absolute lifechanging event, will be participating in a traditional ceremony of one of the indigenous tribes in the Amazon. Most of these ceremonies, like 'Baile de Muñeco' or ' Yurupary', are not allowed for people from outside of the community. But some of the tribes organize similar events like 'presentations’ of their culture, where they allow you to get a little look into their music, dances, and habits. If you are interested in traditional indigenous cultures, which go back hundreds, or even thousands of years, this is definitely a 'must see' or 'must do'!
