ORINOQUIA REGION

Must-See |

Caño Cristales - Los Cuarzos

The Orinoquía region is actually not visited that often by foreign tourists, and normally referred to as a ‘of the beaten track’ destination. But you will be surprised to see that within this immense region, you also find some popular things to do. Caño Cristales is maybe the best know, but also the National Park of Tuparro, the wildlife spotting in the flatlands, and the surroundings of San José de Guaviare are getting a lot of promotion. Here we mention some things you should try to include in your visit, some ‘must see’ and ‘must do’,

Caño Cristales

The Caño Cristales River, in the vast Sierra de La Macarena Natural Park, is undoubtedly the most remarkable river in Colombia and one of the most beautiful in the world. The 'River of Five Colors' owes its nickname to a special natural phenomenon in which the algae located at the bottom of the river give the water its red, blue, green, yellow and brown hues. The National Park itself is also an iconic place, located on the plateau of the Sierra de La Macarena, a natural reserve of 6200 square kilometers where no less than three different ecosystems come together: the Amazon rainforest, the forests of the Andes and the savannah of Los Llanos.

Safaris

Some parts of the Orinoquía region, especially remote areas outside the cities, are among the best spot for wildlife spotting. When visiting this area, you should definitely concern to include a type of ‘Safari’ trip. Don’t be scared for the rain season, as both seasons (rain and dry) have their charm.

Tuparro - Orinoco river

The Tuparro National Natural Park is located in the municipality of Cumaribo in the Department of Vichada, in the Orinoco Region, approximately 6 hours from Puerto Carreño. The territory extends over an area of 548,000 hectares and is bathed by the Tomo River to the north, and the Tuparro, Tuparrito and Caño Maipures rivers to the south. The Tuparro is an extensive green savannah crossed by large rivers with powerful streams and golden beaches, small streams of crystalline waters, gallery forests, morichales and salt marshes, as well as enormous crystalline rocks in the form of rounded hills. It is estimated that there are more than 320 species of birds, many of them associated with the water bodies.

"Llanera" culture

A visit to the Orinoquía is not complete without including something of the typical culture of ‘Los llanos’. The music, the food, or the traditional ‘cowboy’ activities on the huge farm lands are definitely a ‘must see’ or a ‘must do’.
