The Caribbean region consists of eight departments, and extends from the Gulf of Urabá on the border with Panama to the Peninsula of la Guajira at the border of Venezuela. It’s a combination of some tropical white palm beaches with crystal clear water, Colonial cities like UNESCO Heritage Cartagena, other small colonial towns like Mompox, Lorica, and Cienagá, and the highest mountains in Colombia. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, with two peaks from almost 6000m, is not only the home of many endemic bird species, it’s also the territory of some traditional Indigenous cultures, of which the Kogi and the Arhuaco are the most famous ones. The region is mostly visited after a roundtrip in Colombia and of course it’s the perfect spot to end a journey and relax on beaches like National Park Tayrona, the Morrosquillo Bay, or on the Islands of San Andres and Providencia. But there is much more, and traveling this in region is more than just relaxing. Add to the former options also the desert of la Guajira, the jungle of the Darian, the typical culture of the Magdalena River, and all the colourful festivals, and you have enough to fill a full itinerary. With Cartagena considered as most beautiful city in South America, you also find an important International Airport for lying in and/or out of Colombia.
