This region owes its name to the Andes mountain range, which towards the north of Colombia is divided into three mountain ranges called Occidental, Central and Oriental. The Central mountain range is separated from the Western one by the Cauca River, and from the Eastern Cordillera by the Magdalena River. Because of the rivers Cauca and Magdalena, forming two huge valleys in between the mountain ranges, we find a lot of altitude difference, and as a result also all the different ecosystems. All the way from tropical climate to the snow peaks. It’s not only the longest region in Colombia, going all the way from the border of Ecuador to the Caribbean, it’s also the most visited region by foreign tourists. Archeological sites, coffee plantations, tropical rainforest, deserts, colonial towns, National Parks like Los Nevados and Sierra Nevada de Cocuy, mountaineering, and the unique ecosystem of the Paramo, among other highlights, can all be found. The Andes is also linked to the three main cities in Colombia; Bogota, Medellin, and Cali. These, and other important cities like Bucaramanga in the north, Pasto in the south, and the cities in the Coffee Region, are all very well connected. You can easily travel over land, visiting other small regions on the way, or connect them by flying with one of the many national airlines in Colombia.
