In the absolute north of Colombia, on the border with Venezuela, lies the department la Guajira. This so-called peninsula is mainly inhabited by the Wayuu Indians. This original population survives in the desert by keeping goats and fishing in the ocean. It is perhaps the most sparsely populated area of the Caribbean coast and besides fishing and keeping goats the economy thrives also on salt and coal harvesting.

The most well known touristic destinations are the beaches of 'Cabo de la Vela' and 'Pilon de Azucar', an enormous rock in the form of a piramid that looks over the nearby beaches. The packages that we offer in la Guajira are always inclusive these two destinations. Besides that we also visit the 'Santuario de los Flamengos' (a nature park where flamengo's can be seen), Uribía (capital of the Wayuu Indians), Manaure (salt mines), the beach 'Playa Ojo de Agua' and the viewpoint 'Mirador del Faro'..

Beside the standard package for 4 days we offer also an adventurous tour of 7 to 8 days during which we will go to the absolute north, that is called the 'la Alta Guajira'. Here we will visit the ecopark 'Jepirachi', the beaches 'Bahia Honda' and 'Bahia Hondita', the desert of 'Bahia Honda', 'Punto Gallinas', the sand dunes of 'Taroa', 'Nazareth', 'Parque Nacional la Makuira', 'Puerto Estrella', 'Laguna de los Patos' (freshwater lake in the middle of the desert), 'Puerto Lopez', 'Punta Espada' and 'Piedra del destino'.

Important: During this trip we will spend the night in Chinchorros (big hammocks) or in cabins. Energy is gained through generators which will work between 6 and 8 in the evenings. For a program to 'la Alta Guajira' we will go in a 4x4 and we spend a lot of time in the car.

Day 1
Transport from hotel/airport in Santa Marta or hotel/airport in Riohacha to 'Santuario Flora y Fauna los Flamengos', boat tour in simple wooden boats over the water to see the flamingos. Accommodation in the park in cabañas.

Day 2
Transport to Uribía, capital of the Wayuu Indiana, where we have time to visit the local (goat) market. Then to Manaure for a visit to the salt planes. In the afternoon transport to Cabo de la Vela where we stay in Chinchorros or in cabins at the beach.

Day 3
You have the whole day in Cabo de la Vela where we visit beautiful beaches (o.a. playas Pilon de Azucar and Playa Ojo de Agua), Pilon de Azucar (a rock in the form of a pyramid) and to see the sun go down on the 'Mirador del Faro', a lighthouse with nice views. The second night in Chinchorros or in huts at the beach.

Day 4
Transport back to the hotel/airport Santa Marta of hotel/airport Riohacha and end of the program

All programs that the DE UNA Colombia Tours offers to the 'la Alta Guajira' are custom made packages. We will visit all important destinations from the package Cabo de la Vela, like 'SFF los Flamengos', Uribía, Manaure and Cabo de la Vela with Pilon de Azucar. Then we go on with the program with a 4x4 jeep to the north.

It is possible to arrange a program of 5 to 6 days, even though we advise you to spend at least 7 to 8 days to that area to fully enjoy everything that this area has to offer. To get to the most beautiful places of 'la Alta Guajira' it is inevitably to spend al lot of time in the car.
